Spot The Ball
Turning up the pilot light...
He wouldn’t go on record with me, but a military helicopter pilot was doing night manouvres over Pewsey one Summer when he spotted four people on his thermal imaging equipment, clambering over a gate into a wheat field, weighed down with circlemaking gear.
“It doesn’t matter how dark your clothes are. This equipment will light you up like a rock band on the pyramid stage at Glastonbury”, he remembered chuckling to his co-pilot
At the very instant they were all at the gate and inches from the ‘arena’… a giant ball of light about the size of football pitch centre circle ‘flicked on’ above where they’d be working….
…but it wasn’t to assist them. It too was only visible on the thermal imaging. To the team below it would be concealed.
“It felt to me that it was somehow supervising them”, he said. “We have to report all this stuff… but it’s never made public”

This is a truly mysterious and captivating piece. You’ve described it in a way that leaves the reader with the lingering sense of the light and its watchful presence...the lack of a clear ending only adds to its intrigue and memorability.
